An Electric G-Wagon: 9th Jan 2025

Mercedes-Benz

Mercedes Benz India has made it official that the electric G-Wagon, called the G 580 with EQ Technology is set for production launch in India starting Jan 9, 2025. It incorporates modern touches without squinting while keeping the G 580’s iconic shape intact—through more subtle design revisions. Using four independent electric motors, one for each wheel, makes for exceptional off-road capability and very precise power delivery.

This vehicle features a very sizeable 116kWh battery pack, promising a 470km range on a single charge. Mercedes-Benz mentioned the new G-Class electric is an uncompromised machine that can outperform its combustion-engined sibling when driving off-road. Based on the pedigree of the legendary off-road machine the G Class, the G 580 takes electric technology to new heights on the road, while keeping the vehicle capable of it.

The rigid rear axle integrates the electric drive unit, incorporating a newly engineered rigid rear axle that retains the independent front suspension design for superior handling and stability.

With their innovative setup, not only does their vehicle’s structural integrity improves but also they give a perfect power distribution on wheels for better performance in any kind of terrain.

The virtual differential locks represent a major departure from more traditional design, replacing mechanical differential locks.

This modern system allows for just the right amount of power delivery to each wheel to deliver maximum traction and stability, without using a continual clutch to adjust for torque vectoring. Through this virtual system, the G 580 obtains better off-road capabilities that enable it to successfully cope with the likes of sand, snow and mud.

A feature of note is the G 580’s water-wading ability. It provides 100mm more in water crossing and flood-prone areas than the standard G class and has a maximum depth of 850mm - 100mm more than the standard G class.

The electric G-Class has improved capability that’s not only suited to everyday urban driving but also more challenging off-road environments.

Mercedes-Benz will launch the electric model, named G 580 with EQ Technology, which will be available in India starting from January 9, 2025.

This is a major shift in one of the most celebrated brands on the road, as G Wagon steps into the age of green mobility while maintaining the adventurous and luxurious appeal travelers have loved for generations.
