Tesla Begins Recruitment for Autopilot Testing in India

Tesla has commenced the hiring process for specialised drivers in New Delhi and Mumbai, as part of its ongoing efforts to adapt and test its Autopilot technology in Indian driving environments. The electric vehicle manufacturer is recruiting personnel for its vehicle data collection team under the designation of “prototype vehicle operators.”

These roles involve operating engineering vehicles for extended periods—typically ranging from five to eight hours per day—to collect camera and audio data. This data will be used to train and refine Tesla’s Autopilot and Full Self-Driving (FSD) systems for real-world road conditions in India.

The responsibilities of these operators extend beyond driving. Selected candidates will also be expected to manage in-vehicle data recording equipment, assess the quality of data collected, and provide feedback to support system development. Preferred applicants will have a sound understanding of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), Autonomous Driving Systems (ADS), and possess advanced driving capabilities along with the ability to work in a dynamic environment.

Tesla’s Autopilot suite is designed to assist with driving functions such as lane changes, turns, and navigation, although it still requires active driver oversight. In line with its global strategy, the company continues to develop its vision-based system that uses cameras rather than radar for environmental sensing.

This recruitment initiative represents a notable development in Tesla’s plans for the Indian market, suggesting that groundwork is being laid to tailor its autonomous technologies to local traffic conditions.
