VinFast Enters India: Opens First Dealership in Chennai, Lays Groundwork for Ambitious Expansion

Chennai, June 2025 — Vietnamese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer VinFast has officially opened the doors to its first dealership in India, located in the upscale neighborhood of Teynampet, Chennai. This isn’t just another showroom opening—it’s the starting gun for the brand’s broader Indian offensive and signals VinFast’s intent to become a major player in the country’s fast-evolving EV ecosystem.
A Landmark for VinFast—and India’s EV Landscape
This Chennai dealership is more than symbolic. Positioned in one of the city’s busiest and most affluent zones, it’s a calculated move. VinFast is targeting a new generation of Indian buyers—tech-savvy, environmentally conscious, and open to new brands that offer global-standard quality at competitive prices.

The outlet will serve as a base for the company’s retail rollout, customer engagement, test drives, and after-sales interaction. It’s expected to be the first of many such touchpoints as the company prepares for an aggressive sales and manufacturing strategy in the subcontinent.
VinFast’s Entry Strategy for India
VinFast, a subsidiary of Vietnamese conglomerate Vingroup, announced its entry into India late last year, and its pace since then has been rapid. In February 2024, the company signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Tamil Nadu government to establish a massive integrated EV facility in Thoothukudi, southern Tamil Nadu.

Key Highlights of the India Strategy:
- Initial Investment: $500 million (₹4,200 crore approx.) in Phase 1, with future expansion bringing the total to nearly $2 billion.
- Manufacturing Target: Initial annual capacity of 150,000 vehicles, with an eye on both domestic sales and exports to Africa, the Middle East, and other Asian markets.
- Jobs & Local Economy: The plant is expected to generate over 3,000 jobs directly and indirectly.
- Local Assembly (CKD): For now, VinFast will start with completely knocked down (CKD) kits for early sales, to be followed by fully localized manufacturing.
- After-Sales Infrastructure: Strategic partnership with Global Assure to manage service, roadside assistance, and mobile charging support.
The Products: VF 6 and VF 7 Take Center Stage
VinFast plans to lead its Indian debut with two of its globally tested products: the VF 6 and VF 7. Both models will be offered in multiple variants, catering to different needs, from city commuters to long-distance EV adopters.

Both models are expected to go on sale during the 2025 festive season, with pre-launch bookings to be opened in the coming months. Initial units will be CKD imports assembled at a temporary facility, before full-scale manufacturing commences in 2026.
VF 3: India’s Game Changer Waiting in the Wings
Though not part of the immediate launch lineup, the VF 3, a small electric SUV already making waves in Vietnam, is being seriously considered for India. With its ultra-compact dimensions, simple styling, and a range of about 200–250 km, the VF 3 could become a true mass-market EV alternative, especially if priced under ₹10 lakh. A locally built VF 3 could disrupt the entry-level EV space in India currently dominated by Tata and MG.
Why India, and Why Now?
India is the third-largest auto market globally, and its EV transition—though still in early stages—presents tremendous opportunity. VinFast clearly sees India not just as a market, but as a manufacturing and export base.
With production planned near the VOC Port in Thoothukudi, the company can efficiently ship EVs to Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and even East Africa. Unlike legacy brands struggling with platform adaptation, VinFast was born electric—and is betting that its digital-first, scalable architecture can outmaneuver conventional players.
VinFast Globally: Ambitious, Aggressive, and Evolving
Globally, VinFast is still a young brand but has made aggressive moves:
- North America: Building a $4 billion plant in North Carolina; VF 8 and VF 9 already launched in the US
- Europe: Sales in France, Germany, and Netherlands began in 2023; working on local retail and service partners
- Southeast Asia: Expanding presence in Indonesia, Thailand, and now India
- Stock Market: Listed on the NASDAQ (VFS) since 2023 after a SPAC merger
The brand has faced its fair share of criticism—particularly over delivery delays and initial product quality in the U.S.—but has been quick to adapt and reinvest. VinFast’s founder, Pham Nhat Vuong, remains deeply committed, personally pumping billions into the company to ensure its long-term success.
Closing Thoughts: An Outsider to Watch
VinFast’s entry into India is bold. Very few companies have come in with such a well-rounded plan—retail, manufacturing, after-sales, and export vision—all aligned from day one. While the EV segment in India is still small compared to ICE vehicles, it’s growing at triple-digit annual rates, and buyers are showing increasing interest in international offerings.
If priced right and backed by strong service, the VF 6 and VF 7 have the potential to shake up India’s mid-size EV space. But beyond that, VinFast is also sending a clear message: it wants to be a global EV player, and India is a central piece in that puzzle.
The Teynampet dealership is just the start—but in many ways, it’s already a landmark.
