The BYD Sealion 7 : Can it make its mark in the Indian EV market?

The Sealion 7, a stylish, feature-loaded Electric SUV, was launched in India after debuting at AutoExpo 2025.

It features two variants: Premium and Performance, which are quoted at INR 48.9 Lakh (ex-showroom) and INR 54.9 Lakh (ex-showroom), respectively.

The Sealion 7 is the fourth and latest addition to BYD's Dynamic EV lineup in India and is based on the same design as the Seal electric sedan.

Key Features:

Exterior:

The Sealion 7 continues with the Ocean X design language and the ocean vibe as its predecessor.

The exterior proportions are unlike that of a traditional SUV, but rather more inclined towards a cross-over with a sloping roofline, and scattered X-shaped patterns all around, predominantly in the front bumper, and headlights (much like The Seal).

The Sealion 7 gets 19-inch alloy wheels in the Premium variant and 20 inches in the higher-ranged Performance variant.

It is available in the following four colours: Atlantis Grey, Aurora White, Cosmos Black and Shark Grey (again continuing with the Oceanic/ aquatic vibe).

Interiors:

The Interior design is very similar to that of the Seal sedan, especially the dashboard layout and steering wheel.

A 15.6-inch rotating touchscreen infotainment system, located centrally on the dashboard takes the limelight. It is loaded with most of the essential functions and controls.

The electric SUV also offers:

  • Ventilated front seats
  • Connected car tech
  • A heads-up display
  • An electrically adjustable driver’s seat with a memory function
  • A floating digital instrument cluster
  • A panoramic glass roof with a sunshade
  • A 50W wireless phone charger, a heads-up-display
  • A powered tailgate
  • Vehicle-to-load (V2L) function.

The features are the same on the Premium and Performance variants.

The SUV has a 520-litre boot, which can open up to 1,789 litres when the rear seats are folded down.

Being an EV, the Sealion 7 also has a 58-litre frunk.

Safety:

The Sealion 7 is equipped with 11 airbags, a 360-degree camera, and a host of ADAS features like blind spot detection, forward collision warning, intelligent cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and more.

Powertrain:

Both variants of the Sealion 7 feature the same 82.56kWh LFP low-voltage battery pack, dubbed "BYD Blade Battery". The Sealion 7 uses BYD's e-platform 3.0 with an 8-in-1 Electric powertrain.

The major difference between both variants lies in their power output and performance.

  • The Premium variant churns out an output of 313HP and a peak torque of 380Nm through its rear wheels, allowing the SUV to complete the 0-100kph run in 6.7 seconds with a WLTP-claimed range of 482km.
  • The Performance variant, which is aimed towards more zealous and spirited buyers rips out 530HP and 690Nm peak torque, helping it sprint 0-100kph from rest in 4.5 seconds. Additionally, it gets all-wheel drive, too, but takes a slight hit to its WLTP-claimed range, which stands at 456km.

The Sealion 7 will be competing with some of the EV industry's heavyweights, for instance, the Koreans - the Kia EV6 and the Hyundai IONIQ 5 at this price point. The closest rival in terms of overall performance and features is the Volvo C40 Recharge.

With deliveries of the first 70 units of the Sealion 7 set to begin on March 7 2025, it is only a matter of time before we can know for sure whether the Sealion 7 will swim through its competition and prove itself as a solid addition to the rapidly-growing Indian EV market and also BYD's dynamic lineup.
